The Four-Stage Quality Pipeline

Stage one is Discovery. Community members — often called 'scouts' — browse Chinese marketplaces like Taobao, Weidian, and 1688 to find interesting items. They submit links to a review queue with basic information: product name, category, approximate price, and a seller screenshot.

Stage two is Quality Control. Moderators or volunteer QC reviewers purchase samples using community funds or personal budgets. They photograph the received items from multiple angles, measure dimensions, compare to seller photos, and document any discrepancies. This stage is the heart of the BBDBuy trust system.

Stage three is Editorial Organization. Verified items are formatted into the database with consistent fields: product name, category, link, price, supplier, QC rating, review count, sizing notes, and shipping estimate. Dead links are flagged and removed.

Stage four is Community Maintenance. Ongoing buyers update prices, report dead links, upload additional QC photos, and leave reviews. This distributed maintenance keeps the database accurate without relying on a single central authority.

Data Architecture: From Spreadsheet to Web App

Early BBDBuy databases were literally Google Sheets — simple, shareable, and easy to update collaboratively. As the community grew, limitations became apparent: slow loading with thousands of rows, no native search filtering, and difficulty handling images.

Modern BBDBuy platforms have evolved into lightweight web applications. They use database backends (often Supabase or Firebase) to store structured item data, cloud storage for QC photo galleries, and React or Vue frontends for fast, filterable browsing. The 'spreadsheet' name persists, but the technology has moved far beyond cells and formulas.

Trust Metrics: How Ratings Are Calculated

QC ratings are not arbitrary scores. Most databases use a weighted formula that factors in: sample quality vs seller photos (40%), material and construction assessment (25%), packaging and shipping condition (15%), and community review sentiment (20%). A score of 90+ means the item essentially matches or exceeds expectations.

Supplier ratings aggregate across all their listed items. A supplier with three products scoring 92%, 88%, and 95% receives an aggregate rating around 91-92%. Suppliers with significant negative community feedback are flagged for re-review or removal.
